College coaches SOUND OFF on tourney expansion

What has long been rumored became official late last week, as the NCAA Tournament will officially expand to 76 teams.

It now means that we will add eight more at large bids (most coming in the form of mediocre high major teams) and we will now have 12 total play-in games on Tuesday and Wednesday instead of four.

Ick.

Well, just hours before the tournament officially expanded, CBS Matt Norlander caught up with some of the best coaches in the sport.

The response was, umm… not in the NCAA’s favor on this one. Here were some of the responses:

Gonzaga coach Mark Few:

"It's the dumbing down of the regular season, which is sad," Few said. "We're out here trying to generate more interest in the regular season and expansion doesn't help. That's where we've been struggling. Plus, the [NCAA Tournament] unit shares, what's happening there? Don't screw with something when you already know it's great. The tournament is great as is."

UConn’s Dan Hurley:

"What I think makes the tournament special is the qualification for it," Hurley told CBS Sports. "You don't want the regular season to be rendered meaningless and to take away from November, December, January, February. The qualification process makes the regular season intense and pressure-packed. It should be a privilege to play in the tournament, not a right, and obviously if it expands too much and you don't have to have a real good season to make it, that would take away from the tournament. Does it get too big?"

Arkansas’ John Calipari:

"I am a big believer in the idea that if it's not broke, don't fix it, and I think that applies to the NCAA Tournament," Calipari told CBS Sports. "Having said that, if we are to expand, my hope is that at least half the spots are held for non-Power Four teams. If they do that, we are making the decision for the right reasons. As someone who has been both David, and won some, and Goliath, and lost some, that's what makes this tournament special. We can't afford to lose that special piece of our sport."

Despite the frustration the show will go on.

Had we had 76 teams this year, here are some of the teams that would’ve made the cut (including their pre-NCAA Tournament resumes)

  • Auburn Tigers (17-16, 7-11 in SEC)

  • Oklahoma Sooners (19-15, 7-11 in SEC)

  • Indiana Hoosiers (18-14, 9-11 in Big Ten)

Again, just gross.

The NBA Draft lottery comes - with plenty of intrigue

The NBA Draft lottery was on Sunday, and came with plenty of intrigue.

First though, the order:

The intrigue clearly begins at the top, in more ways than one:

AJ Dybantsa vs. the field: The first intrigue comes at the top of, who will actually go No. 1?

AJ Dybantsa has been the presumed favorite for a while now, after leading college basketball in scoring at 25.5 points per game. But Darryn Peterson, Cam Boozer, and maybe even Caleb Wilson or Darius Acuff have an argument as the best player in the draft.

What do the Washington Wizards do: There’s also the added layer of who got the No. 1 pick, as the Washington Wizards will select No. 1 overall for the first time since drafting John Wall at No. 1 in 2010.

What makes it especially interesting is that the Wizards were actually active at the NBA trade deadline, adding point guard Trae Young and big man Anthony Davis.

While it’s probably not right to call them franchise “cornerstones” adding a big wing like Dybantsa makes a ton of sense.

Should the Jazz trade up: Finally, what was Washington’s gain was Utah’s loss, as the Jazz were one spot away from having the guaranteed opportunity to take Dybantas, the former BYU star with the No. 1 pick.

Put simply, there may never be another opportunity for Utah to draft a star from a Utah college, who also spent part of his high school years in Utah as well.

It’s left many wondering if the Jazz should do everything in their power to move up and draft Dybantsa.

We’ll have plenty of time to find out what Washington, Utah and everyone else’s moves are - as the first night of the NBA Draft isn’t until June 23rd.

  • Fun story here, as Ohio State coach Ryan Day could one day be facing his son on the gridiron. That’s because RJ Day committed to Northwestern. The best part, Day got to be part of an actual recruiting visit like any other parent
