College basketball's portal closes - but the craziness is just beginning
College basketball’s portal closed on Monday at midnight eastern, but it came with quite a bit of last minute craziness!
Tounde Yessoufou is a last minute portal entry
The portal closed, but it wasn’t without a bang and one big name entering at the midnight hour.
That would be Baylor star Tounde Yessoufou, who entered just hours before the portal closed. The freshman was a breakout star for an otherwise forgettable Baylot squad, averaging 17.8 points and 5.9 rebounds as a freshman in Waco last year.
Yessoufou had previously stated that he was fully focused on the NBA Draft but with the NIL money flowing he is now keeping all options open.
In addition to Yessoufou entering, here are the big names who announced their transfer destinations on Tuesday:
John Blackwell - committed to Duke
Blackwell was arguably the top guard available in the portal this season, after averaging 19.1 points , 5.1 rebounds per game in the Big Ten, all while shooting 38.9 percent from behind the three-point arc.
He now brings veteran scoring pop to a Duke squad that will again have plenty of freshman talent (headlined by the No. 1 recruiting class in America) and center Patrick Ngonba.
As we write this, the Blue Devils are awaiting word on the return of wing Dame Sarr, a potential first round pick.
Terrence Brown, G, Utah +Matt Able, G, NC State + Maxim Louge, F, Florida Atlantic - committed to North Carolina
Michael Malone had his busiest day yet as North Carolina head coach, snagging three-portal commits.
Brown is a versatile, high-scoring guard from Utah who averaged close to 19.9 points per game last year, while Able is a high-upside wing who played at hated rival NC State a season ago. He averaged 8.8 points and 35 percent shooting as a freshman in the ACC and has intriguing NBA upside. Louge is a bouncy, athletic big man from Florida Atlantic.
Now, all of Tar Heel nation waits on word from star center Henri Veesaar, who has not publicly announced whether he plans to return to school for another year or test the NBA Draft waters. Should he return, the Tar Heels are a likely preseason Top 10 team.
Paulius Murauskas, F/C, Saint Mary's - committed to Arizona State
An All-WCC forward, who averaged 18.4 points per game and 7.6 rebounds at Saint Mary’s, Murauskas will now follow his former coach Randy Bennett to Arizona State.
It’ll be a homecoming of sorts for Murauskas, who actually began his career playing for Tommy Lloyd and Arizona.
Alvaro Folgueiras, F/C, Iowa - committed to Louisville
Folgueiras became the fourth high-profile player to commit to Louisville and Pat Kelsey.
The 6’11 stretch forward who had 15 points in the Hawkeyes’ Sweet 16 win over Nebraska, joins Flory Bidunga (Kansas), Jackson Shelstad (Oregon) and Karter Knox (Arkansas) on the new look Cardinals.

Them Gator Boys Stay Hot!

After winning the 2025 national championship, Todd Golden coined the term “Them Gators Boys Stay Hot!”
Well, no one is hotter than Golden’s crew right now.
That’s because on Tuesday Florida announced that star forward Thomas Haugh has decided against entering the NBA Draft - where he most certainly would’ve been a first round pick - to instead to return to Florida. He comes back after earning All-SEC honors and averaging 17.1 points per game.
Haugh becomes the latest Gator to announce his return to college, joining fellow forward Alex Condon and guard Boogie Fland. Forward Reuben Chinyelu also announced that he’d consider a return while testing the draft waters.
The only questions now with Haugh back, does anyone other than Florida have an argument as No. 1 team in the country? And… is Todd Golden actually done?!

An NBA note with a semi-interesting college twist is that Billy Donovan stepped down as head coach of the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday. Assuming he doesn’t take an NBA job, he’d be a prime candidate if either the Kentucky or Kansas job opens next year
Things are so bad in Kentucky, even the governor is now worried about the state of the athletics department
Kentucky basketball did get a bit of good news on Tuesday, as 6’2 high school guard Zyon Hawthorne announced he’s coming to Kentucky. Hawthorne is the younger brother of Braydon Hawthorne who redshirted in Lexington last year, and also announced his return
