UPDATE: Lane Kiffin says race, diversity impacted recruiting at Ole Miss; SEC coaches respond
It all starts with this quote in an article published by Vanity Fair on Monday.
"[They would say], 'Hey, Coach, we really like you. But my grandparents aren't letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi,'" Kiffin said, according to the magazine. "That doesn't come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Parents were sitting here this weekend saying the campus' diversity feels so great: 'It feels like there's no segregation. And we want that for our kid because that's the real world.'"
Then Kiffin issued this apology.
“I really apologize if anybody at Ole Miss or in Mississippi was offended by that. In a four-hour interview, I was asked a lot of questions on a lot of things, and Ole Miss has been wonderful to me and my family. I was asked questions about the differences in recruiting, and I said a narrative that we battled there from some out-of-state Black parents and grandparents was not wanting their kid to move to Mississippi. That’s a narrative that coaches have been fighting forever. It wasn’t calculated by bringing it up.”
Then Texas HC Steve Sarkisian chimed in.
“At Texas, we will only take 50% of a player’s academic credit hours. You may be a semester from graduating, but you’re going all the way back to 50% if you play here and want a degree. But at Ole Miss, they can take you. All you have to do is take basket weaving, and you can get an Ole Miss degree.”
On3 clarified, “For the record, the interview with Sarkisian was conducted back in March, so Sarkisian wasn’t piling on after Kiffin’s comments.”
Then Florida Gators new head coach Jon Sumrall jumped in on Twitter/X too.
“Grateful to coach at a top 10 public university that also offers advanced basket weaving!”
What a time to be in the SEC. Did we honestly expect anything different from Lane Kiffin though?

NBA Combine Day 2
Let’s take a look at some of the top prospects’ performances from Tuesday.
AJ Dybantsa
Shuttle Run: 2.99 (unofficial)
No-Step Vert: 33.5” in
Max Vertical: 42.0” in
Darryn Peterson
His physical measurements match up closely with Devin Booker and Dwyane Wade. One interesting note that came out recently is that Peterson and his representatives view him more as a point guard than a shooting guard. (see tweet)
Significantly, the Wizards, who hold the No. 1 overall pick, traded for veteran point guard Trae Young in January. Meanwhile the Jazz, who hold the No. 2 pick, have young guards like Isaiah Collier and Keyonte George at the point guard position.
Max Vertical: 37.5” in
He also did very well in 3-point shooting.
Cam Boozer
Boozer also shot 19/25 in 3-point shooting. His physical measurements are similar to Al Horford and Bam Adebayo’s. (see tweet)
One notable connection: his father, former Utah Jazz forward Carlos Boozer, now works in Utah’s front office, and the Jazz hold the No. 2 pick in the draft.
Caleb Wilson
11/25 3-point shooting
No-Step Vert: 34.5” in
Max Vertical: 39.5” in
And he had a great quote at the combine:
“I will change your franchise, your culture, your program, your city. I did that at North Carolina.”
College Basketball Analyst Jay Williams also said this about Wilson.
